story time

ST1

"So...this is story time at the library?

ST2

Dude! There are a LOT of kids here.

ST3

Maybe I'd better wedge myself in with Sophie.

ST4

What? Do I want a shaker? I guess so.

ST5

What am I supposed to do? Lick it?

St6

Ohh! Shake it? Okay, I can do that. What? The song is over? Shoot.

ST7

I suppose I can sit on the floor. I AM a big girl, you know.

ST8

Harry! I said I'm a big girl. Now don't sit so close.

ST9

That's better. Hey! This is a pretty cool story.

ST10

Okay, I can dig this part...I put my hand on my head and that nice lady gives me a stamp. Sweet.

ST11

Story time was pretty cool. Mom, can you bring me back next week?"

a string quilt

Remember this peek I showed you a couple weeks ago?

String

Well, the quilt top is finally done, so I can share a walk through with you. There is a really great tutorial HERE at Film in the Fridge (which is where I got the idea), so keep in mind, Ashley has even more detailed photos.

This is a quilt made with a paper background. Freaky, huh? But, it totally works and the paper makes it so easy to sew (and keep straight). My blocks are a different size than Ashley's...I kept it simple on myself and used 8.5 X 11 printer paper. I'm dying to try one with OLD scrapbook paper and do a 12 X 12 block, though.

Anywhoo, since you want a square, I just folded my paper diagonally edge to edge until I got a 8.5 X 8.5" square and trimmed off the excess. The folded line also gave me a guideline to place my middle strip of plain white fabric on the paper. I used...wait for it...basting spray! Heh. I think Ashley used glue stick (?). So, after you get the white strip glued down the diagonal of your paper - you should have a stack that looks like this. **Important note - my middle white strips are 1.5" wide; fabric strips are 2.5" wide; all seam allowances are 1/4".

String 3

Okay, not the greatest photo, but hopefully you get the idea. My white strips just hang over the edges of my 20 pieces of paper. Next, grab your stack of 2.5" strips. Mine are from a jelly roll I purchased at my lqs. It would be awesome to truly use a ton of scraps. In fact, I have a whole pile of strips I've been trimming from my scraps...for someday.

String 4

I randomly pulled strips from this pile and sewed them (right sides together) on either side of that middle white strip. Yes, right onto the paper. I used a smaller stitch length (about a 2) so it will be easier to rip the paper away later. But, don't rip yet. Press those first two strips open, and add two more. Repeat. With my strips width and my 8.5" blocks, I ended up with 3 strips on either side of the white.

String 12

You can sorta tell in that photo where I am adding the third row of strips. See how the fabric just lines up with the previous strip? No pinning required. The excess fabric is just hanging off the edge of the paper. We'll clean that up later. **Check out my new machine! A garage sale special for $44. Gotta love that.

Next up, the last bit of ironing.

String 2

Ouch. Kinda of busy there on my print ironing board cover. But, see how that second strip on the left is ready to press? Then, I will add the last row to cover that last bit of paper. When all six strips are sewn down and ironed, you will have a pile like this.

String 11

Getting there, but still kind of messy. Grab your rotary trimmer, mat and ruler and lay your blocks upside down.

String 10

Ah, there's the shape we want. Just lay your ruler along the paper edge and trim away all the excess fabric. Easy.

String 9

Flip that baby over and gasp in delight. Repeat nineteen more times.

String 8

Is that blissful, or what? Now comes the therapeutic part. Remove all the paper from the backs of the blocks. The tight stitching comes in handy. My paper came off fairly easily. I had to tug at a few strips, especially where the white was originally basted to the paper. But, all in all, worth the aggravation.

Now, lay out your blocks. (This is the fun part).

String 6

Four across and five down. Honestly, this is exactly how I laid them down first time. I didn't fiddle at all. They are all so random, it doesn't really matter. Since I used the jelly roll pack (which has tons of different patterns and colorways) I had very few repeats. If you have more repeated fabric, you may have to switch around a bit. But, I love how that white strip in the middle of the block separates the patterns. Here's a view from above.

String 1

Pure yumminess. Next, simply sew your blocks together.

String 5

Hmm, I think the sun kind of washed the color out a bit. I promise to take a few more photos after I quilt and bind this one. In fact, that's today's project, so off I go.

Thanks for bearing with all the steps. If you tackle this project, I'd LOVE to hear about it! Hey! Maybe someday we should have a block party together. FUN!

Later.

Otherwise titled, sit back with your cup of coffee and enjoy.

Before I start, I would remiss if I didn't point out that Paper Crafts has begun announcing their SIX new Go To Gals. I'm thinking if I'm ever in a down mood, I'll just go back and read today's post on the Paper Crafts Connection (feeling a little embarrassed). Keep an eye on this blog for the next couple of weeks to see who the other five awesomely talented gals are!

Okay, I can't resist this little face first.

Cabin 18

This is pretty typical of how Eloise looked all weekend - grubby face and all. Staying at Grandma's Cabin is our version of camping (with hot showers and soft beds, ahem).

Cabin 17

Saturday morning we met the cousins in downtown Flagstaff for their town parade. The cabin is about 30 miles from downtown and I feel bad that we've never made it to their parade before (too lazy, I guess). It was really cute.

Cabin 16

Whitney had the flag waving down.

Cabin 15

Much anticipation waiting for the parade to begin.

Cabin 14

Hands over your hearts for the color guard.

Cabin 10

What's a parade in the pines without Smokey the Bear?

Cabin 13

Harry couldn't believe his luck - they were handing out actual books on the parade route, not to mention candy, frisbees, frozen otter pops, whole cans of soda and more! Wow.

Cabin 9

Ethan was jonesin' for a Geek Squad t-shirt, but he was too far back in the crowd.

Cabin 8

The kids loved these gorgeous (and big) horses.

Cabin 7

Ah, men in kilts. Need I say more?

Cabin 11

Eloise stayed back a ways from the scary parade. A cookie and Mom's lap sounded better.

Cabin 12

Whitney waving goodbye to the parade.

Cabin 6

A quick shot of the whole crew before we scampered off to the park.

I actually have a few more photos from the weekend, but that will be another day. Tomorrow is Crafty Wednesday, so stay tuned!

Later.

ohmygoodness

Maybe it's because I've been away for almost a week, but there seem to be so many fun things to catch up on the internet. We had really sporadic connection with Mom's laptop. That was okay, I really don't mind having a break; like I said, it makes things more interesting to come back to.

So, what can you do on the internet today?

Check out the Paper Crafts Gallery Idol submissions (and vote for your favorite) .

Look (and drool) at the new quilts over at Film in the Fridge.

Stalk the Cosmo Cricket  blog for their top design team picks.

Browse at Fabric.com and debate whether to take advantage of their sale (that ends tonight).

Help me decide which color swimsuit to buy over at Land's End.

OR

Spend some time on this photography blog I recently found. Bliss.

See? Lot's of things to waste time and avoid laundry to do.

I have tons of photos to share from the weekend, so check back tomorrow for a photo heavy blog post.

still here

Okay, just a tip here: when you are "borrowing" some neighbor's unsecured wireless internet you aren't allowed to complain when that service is down. Heh.

But now, for some reason, we're back online, so I'll quickly post some photos for you. We've been 100% enjoying the cool breezes and pine trees. We have the sewing machine parked right next to the door to catch the breeze. Lovely.

Here's the latest progress.

This quilt top is from the fabric I showed yesterday - now it has muslin sashing and will eventually have a patterned binding and stipple quilting. I will definitely share when it's done.

IMG_1700_2_1

Can you tell this one is made up of ALL scraps? I just love how it turned out. It's a little crazy, but super happy. This will get a tiny polka dot binding and quilting along each block.

IMG_1692_3_1

This last one (for now) is made from a charm pack. It's called a stacked coin quilt since the charm squares (originally 5" squares) are cut in half to create a "coin" (that is 2.5 X 5"). Then, we stacked them into strips and added white sashing. Soooo cute. This quilt will have additional sashing around the border, a binding and a cute backing.

IMG_1694_1_1

Aww - look at cutie-pie there. Poor baby was running a fever today, wouldn't you know. It never fails that at least one kid comes up ill while on vacation, right? Sigh.

But, overall, very fun and relaxing. In case I don't get connected tomorrow, have a great holiday weekend. We'll be grilling, enjoying a little parade in downtown Flagstaff and celebrating my Mom's birthday (she was born on the 4th of July!). We may even check out the "faux fireworks" in Flag Saturday night. Anyone have any idea what that's all about? Weird.

Okay, better run.

Later.

ahhh...cool weather

Sitting here enjoying the mountain breeze...ahhh! Finally made it "up the hill" after a few false starts. Clara's wire came loose on her braces - off to the orthodontist. A quick stop at the grocery store for diapers. Drive thru Chick-fil-A to save my children's lives (they were dying of hunger). Yeah, right.

But, we made it and it's worth it. Too bad Daddy has to stay in town with Ethan as they both have, ahem, jobs. But, we'll save them a spot on the deck when come up Friday with Grandpa.

We haven't just been sitting around either. I'm excited to share more of this project tomorrow, but in the meantime...here's a sneak of the latest quilting project.
IMG_1665_1_1_1
I'm using some sort of odd program on Mom's laptop, so hopefully this photo comes out okay.

Fun fabrics, eh? And Mom and I decided we're "going green" this week - we're only using fabric from our stash. Boy, it feels good to use up these scraps. I'm cutting even smaller squares today, so I'll post the progress on those as it happens.

Have a super duper Wednesday - I'll be happy as a clam as I head back to the sewing machine.

digging myself out

Whew! Ever wonder what my desk looks like after a marathon scrapping session? Well, wonder no longer...

Disaster Desk

It's a certified disaster zone. Now it's time to call in the clean up crew. Oh wait, that's me. Shoot.

I'm also checking off my "to do" list in preparation for taking the kiddos up to the cabin for a few days. Mom is already there warming up the sewing machine. You wouldn't think it would be so hard to get going in the middle of the week, but it's crazy. I have bills to pay, clothes to pack, another run to the grocery store, etc.

But first, let's do something FUN! How about broadcast the winners of THREE giveaways.

1.  The Unscramble the Jungle Animals game winner is... Gabriela

2.  Winner of the new Card Creations 7... #273...Char

3.  Winner of the Cosmo Cricket goodies...Kara

YAY! Clap, clap, clap. I'll contact you gals for your addresses. But, be forewarned, I'll be honest and admit these probably won't be mailed out until after the holiday weekend, k?

Thanks for the sweet comments on yesterday's post. The powers that be will be checking out my blog later this week, so wish me luck.

Back to the grindstone.

crazy for cosmo

Well, I've been playing with paper all weekend. Not only do I have a Paper Crafts deadline today, I also decided to throw my hat in the ring for a spot on the Cosmo Cricket Design Team.

I love Cori's post on my blog the other day (when I was still on the fence). She said "As for the DT? Absolutely you should go for it. Fun, funky, kitschy and trendy...you were made for that line!"  I really do agree. So, there you go.

Let's see. What do I love about Cosmo Cricket? Um... everything! Well, honestly- how can you not love everything they do? Their designs are a wonderful combination of trendy, retro, and funky all rolled into one. Take the Girl Friday line , for instance.

Happy Girl

The yummy colors, the little stitching accents (which inspired my cross stitches) and the loopy font all make my heart, um, happy!

Then there's the Early Bird line. I can't seem to stop using it. First I grabbed the Ready, Set, Chipboard and went to town. This birdie is too cute.

Happy Birthday Birdie

This next one is mostly paper with a bit of chipboard leaf peeking out. Sweet, I mean Tweet.

You're Tweet

Then I realized that these papers  really match their older paper (which I, of course, have in my stash). How adorable is this?

Bananas

Don't you love paper lines like that? It bugs me when older lines don't coordinate with newer papers. LOVE when the color families work together like Cosmo's do.

Ah yes, back to Early Bird. Mixed in some older chip (clouds) on this layout. I really like how it turned out.

Greet the Day

Since I'm on a roll with this new line, I created a "brunch set" that combines my love of paper crafting with my love of hosting and decorating for guests. ( Remember my baby shower set from last week?) Brunch,  Anyone?

Brunch Party Set

Is this line a killer, or what?  That coffee cup and toast on the menu just make me giggle. Love, love, love it. Here's a close up. I made an invitation, placecards and a cute little tag for my party favor; a jar of homemade jam.

Brunch Set Close Ups

One more card I made from this line that really reflects my style. Kind of quirky. Heh.

You Can't Be Beat

Oh my. It's just too much fun. But, I can't forget the Snorkel line. Sigh. I admit, I'm hoarding most of it for our Summer Vacation photos. We are heading to San Diego at the end of July. Can't wait. But, I did make this little cutie. It's a little hard to see in the photo, but Mr. Fishy is adhered to clear acetate and the holes in the card (bubbles?) allow the recipient to see inside. Fun!

 Happy Day

Silly, eh?

Let's see, what else? Oh yeah. I truly don't want to waste a bit of this paper, so I decided to punch a bunch of scraps with my scalloped square punch and make a pinwheel card. I realize this isn't a classic pinwheel, but it's my funky version. You simply fold the edges of the punched square on the diagonal and adhere it to your card front allowing the center to pop up. It makes a great 3D look. I love this little chipboard "swirl" for an accent.

Enjoy Life

I just noticed that this card has paper from Early Bird, Snorkel AND Girl Friday on it. See? I toldja. They all work awesome together.

I think that wraps up my "for the love of Cosmo Cricket" post. Leave me a comment on which project is your favorite (you can even pick my new banner if you want). Then, I'm going to throw all your names in a hat for a copy of a brand new issue of Paper Crafts AND some Cosmo Cricket goodies. How do you like that?

Thanks, you guys are the best. (BTW- you rocked it on the Blog Hop. Man. Almost 400 comments. Gotta love it. Winners will be posted at Paper Crafts Connection on Tuesday).

testing two

Ugh, ditched the Courier Font...Emilie, you are so right. It was making me go cross-eyed. Okay, this is Georgia. Kind of sweet and old fashioned. Might try this for awhile.

What about those side bar items? How do you customize those? Emilie? Maybe I need the typepad upgrade? I have the "middle of the road" account right now. Help.

Better run, still have dishes to do!? Ack.
